J. James Renick - HBSc, LL.B., J.D.

Jim was born in Calgary but fled at the ripe young age of 15 years. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Toxicology and Environmental Science from the University of Toronto without so much as ever having the study of the law enter his mind. However, others thought the law was a good option and, after much arm-twisting and other significant pressure, Jim was finally convinced to head in that direction. Jim then obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Windsor and his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Detroit. As it turns out, there have been no regrets and Jim has very much enjoyed the practice of law since 1992.

Jim is the proud father of three grown children who have spread their wings and provide him with ample reason to travel to see them (and most importantly, the grandkids!) in Central Canada, Western Canada and the United States.

Jim and Steve first met about 15 years ago when Steve was in-house legal counsel for a large single tier municipality for which Jim was providing outside legal services. They become friends over the years and have long been waiting for an opportunity to practice together. Goad and Goad LLP provided the perfect opportunity.

Jim is definitely the man to see when it comes to Municipal Law, Planning, and Development law, including its related tribunal and hearing work. Jim has been counsel to municipalities and the development field since his call to the bar. He also maintains a general practice in the areas of Real Estate, Wills & Estates and Corporate/Commercial Law.

When Jim isn’t at the office, he can be found on the nearest golf course, pretending to know how to swing a club, or at the movies with his family.
